juice recipes

So it’s day 2 of my 10-day juice fast. Everything started out so well. I woke up with energy and surprisingly was not that hungry. 10 Day Juice FastYou should know that I am someone that NEVER skips breakfast because I’m usually hungry when I wake up and it just sets me up for a better day. I went about getting everything ready; assembling the juicer and selecting my ingredients. I like to start with something a bit sweeter than green vegetable juices so I chose 3 apples, 4 carrots, a beet, and a 1/2 inch slice of peeled ginger.

Then, it all went downhill. [I really hope my father is not reading this!] As I was removing the stems from the apple with a knife – think the same motion as hulling strawberries – the apple slipped and I stabbed my hand. Now, I am not good with my own blood and even as I am writing this is it’s making me squeamish, but I held it together and abruptly woke my husband up to help. We put a cold rag on my hand and my head and since it did not bleed that much I determined I didn’t need medical treatment. But, unfortunately it took me out of commission a bit this morning. After getting bandaged up I laid on the bed for a while to get my barrings – I really am a baby, what can I say. And now I get to deal with a bum hand all week. Oh well, it doesn’t really affect my typing.

Even with all of that, I have continued on with my juicing experiment and would like to share 2 of my favorite recipes with you. These are from a great book titled The Big Book of Juices.

10-day juice fastApple Zing (described as “basic with a bite – the ginger gives a sharp snap to an otherwise sweet juice”)

  • 3 apples
  • 2 carrots
  • 1/2 inch ginger root

Notice I basically used this recipe with a couple tweaks this morning.

Carrot Cleanser (the description says “Any juice using beet or kale can take some getting used to, but once you’ve had it, you can fully appreciate its cleansing properties.”)

  • 3 carrots
  • 1/2 apple
  • 1/2 orange
  • 1/4 beet
  • 1 stick celery
  • 2 large kale leaves
If you are just starting to juice, it’s easiest to begin with more fruit-based juice. The taste is easier to handle and they are much sweeter. Then as you move to vegetables, use those with a high glycemic index, like carrots. Again, these will be sweeter and make it easier to step up to heartier juices. I would never recommend someone going on a 10-day juice fast that had never had fresh veggie juice before. If your taste buds are not prepared, this would be a very difficult task.
Have you juiced before? If so, what’s your favorite recipe? Leave a comment below and share your knowledge.

I decided to start a 10-day juice fast. I was completely inspired by some Dr. Gerson documentaries I watched, as well as Hungry for Change and Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead.

I’m on Day 4 of my juice fast. I can’t stress how HUNGRY I have been! I feel like a wolverine whenever I step into my kitchen, but I have refrained from all the leftover New Years Eve food.

I think one of the biggest under-estimations was that I have to drink juice so frequently 4-6 times a day.

How did long did it take for your hunger pangs to dissipate?

      Hi Brittany,
So sorry for my delay. I hope your juice fast went well. I was hungry for the first two days, but I felt days 8-10 were the hardest. If I ever do a juice fast again, I think I will limit it to a week. And I was drinking juice every 4 hours so about 4 glasses a day. I'd love to hear how your fast ended up. All the best!

We have the entry level Breville juicer and I love it. A bit of a pain to clean up, but in my experience most juicers are. I have a feeling I will be in the same boat and doing a 10 day juice fast after having and weening my little one.

I’m passing this book on to my mother-in-law, she will love it! We’re moving soon, so I may try your juice fast afterwards to get rid of mean moving toxins 😉 Thank you for sharing!

I think this would be a great way to detox, even if it’s just for a couple days. I just finished all ten days and feel great! Good luck on your move. As someone who has moved across the county 5 times, I know how stressful that can be!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I hope your fast is going well. We have a juicer that we got specifically to sneak more veggies into our diet. Your recipe sounds good!

My pleasure. You have a great blog. If you're just starting out with juicing, it's best to mask the veggies with sweet fruits. I really like juicing pineapples too and plan to share a new recipe next Monday. Yummy!

I am not allowed to use knives at our house because I am notorious for cutting myself! Hope you mend soon!

I wish you better luck than I had when I tried something similar. I somehow let my blood sugar get too low and bad things happened. Please don't let that happen! :) Thanks for stopping by on my SITS day! :)

Thanks for the reminder. I'm trying to keep my blood sugar up by consuming high glycemic index veggies like carrots and beets and making sure there is some fruit in every juice. I'm also drinking about 20oz of juice every 3-4 hours so that I do not get too famished. What are some of the indicators that my blood sugar is getting too low?

that sounds about right. I let it go too long in between times. Liquid gets digested faster so you have to have it more often, I think. :) If you're getting too low, you'll get easily angered, easily irritated, you can feel lightheaded or dizzy, and in worse case scenarios, (as in, if you have diabetic tendencies) you can crash.

Thanks Jen! I love juicing in my everyday life, but I'll let you know how this 'only juice for 10-days' thing turns out. Day 3 has been the hardest, but not that bad overall.
