Why You Should Apply to Techstars

Hi ladies. I’m talking to you. Guys have been applying and continue to apply in droves so I’m hoping to convince you ladies to take a step toward leveling the scales and apply to Techstars this year.

With 5 programs, Techstars is growing rapidly and was already named the #1 business accelerator in the world. Yep, you read that right. There are programs every year in Boulder (application deadline is this Friday!), Seattle, Boston, New York, and San Antonio. So if you have a business idea with a tech element you should definitely go here to fill out the application.

I made the leap and was part of the Boulder 2010 class with my company, RentMonitor. It was one of the best business and life decisions I could have ever made. I am still amazed by the amount of knowledge I acquired and cannot believe the incredibly smart family I got to join. The best is even after the program is over, you’re still part of the network and have access to the mentors and alumni. We really enjoy helping each other as much as we can and using each other’s products. That’s what family’s for after all!

But, there were only 2 women and about 30 men in my class, so I’m pleading with you to help me even out our family. There’s no reason there are so few women, other than that they don’t apply. We’re generally not the riskier sex, but we do make great business leaders!

So, what is Techstars? For those that don’t know, it is a three month program where you are connected with incredible mentors that help you turn your idea into a business. The program culminates with a demo day presentation that is given in front of hundreds of investors and influential media. And if that wasn’t enough, there are some awesome perks like free hosting, legal, accounting and banking help, pr, and a $100,000 convertible note. All of this, plus $18,000 in seed funding for only 6% of your business.

What I really want to know is, what are you waiting for? It’s the opportunity of a lifetime and is only available if you apply. So get going!
