Traveling Local: A Look at the Des Moines Farmer’s Market

May 25, 2015, In: Travel Near & Far

Since moving to Iowa one of the things I was looking forward to the most was the weekly Des Moines farmer’s market. It was always a highlight in Boulder and I had heard there was a great one here. In fact, the Downtown Farmer’s Market in Des Moines was ranked the 2nd best farmer’s market in the nation by The Daily Meal. There’s pretty steep competition on that list so that’s really saying something.

This past weekend we ventured out again and had a great time with our friends. There are so many different vendors (over 300), I’m still working to get my bearings. The fun part about the market is that it’s not all produce. Items for sale include desserts, artisanal cheeses, unique peanut butters, homemade jams, fresh brewed ginger beer, great food tents, crafts, flowers, meat, bloody marys, and of course in-season fruits and vegetables. Yum!

Eleanor and I even made the online photo album from The Des Moines Register on opening day.

Do you have a local farmer’s market you like to attend? Or if that’s not your thing, what other summer activities do you look forward to in your town?
